The Copywriter is a member of the University Marketing and Communications team responsible for writing clear, concise, engaging, and intentional copy across various platforms for both external and internal audiences. Kettering University’s copywriter will develop short-form copy, such as headlines, taglines, long-form copy, webpage content, and stories for multiple publications. This position must assume the responsibilities of a Kettering University storyteller and must always focus on the audience first. The Copywriter is a brand steward responsible for writing in the University’s voice and keeping brand consistency.

Duties
Work as a member of the University Marketing and Communications (UMC) division to produce compelling, persuasive content for various print and digital platforms, audiences, and partners across the University.
- Write brilliant and engaging copy for advertising campaigns, email communications, web content, and more.
- Create content specifically designed to engage prospective students and families, alumni, and donors and to elicit the desired call to action. This will involve independent research.
- Work with all individuals within the UMC division to ensure that content is shared and repackaged for different media and across multiple storytelling channels.
- Create content (for digital and print distribution) that supports recruitment and retention, with a special focus on telling stories of student, faculty, staff, and alumni success, academics, co-op, and campus life.
- Periodically test campaigns, materials, and concepts via audience surveys or focus groups.
- Assist in producing externally-facing content, including online news, Merit releases, print and digital versions of Kettering Magazine, the annual philanthropy report, social media posts, video content, etc.
- Create original internal communications content that clearly disseminates information to employees about key University priorities and strategies, and assist with producing Bulldog Weekly e-newsletters for students, faculty, and staff.
- Contribute to editorial planning meetings and assist in managing the editorial calendar and news website.
- Ensure all content aligns with the University’s editorial style guide and visual identity.
Requirements
Requirements and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area (such as English, Public Relations, Digital Media, Journalism or Marketing) and 1-3 years of relevant experience, with a particular focus on writing and content development.
- Must possess a firm command of the English language, excel at efficient research, and be proficient at self-editing. Familiarity with AP style for press releases and other publications is a plus.
- Ability to work independently, quickly, and on deadline.
- Demonstrated expertise in contemporary writing for print and digital media platforms.
- Ability to envision, storyboard, and tell a compelling story including aligned calls to action.
- Familiarity with higher education, with specific preference for knowledge of and affinity for STEM and engineering programs.
