The Graphic Designer is a member of the University Marketing and Communications team responsible for creating thoughtfully designed print and digital materials designed to elicit audience engagement. Create audience-focused, well-organized designs with the purpose of bringing consistency, clarity, and quality in representing the Kettering University brand across all platforms.

Job Responsibilities

Duties
Organize, prepare, coordinate, and provide graphic design services for Kettering University. The successful candidate must be highly creative while working under tight deadlines, often working on several projects at once. Maintain quality and consistency of visual images using University style guides and brand standards.

  • Collaborate with Marketing Manager to facilitate accurate project management for all projects, including ensuring accurate information and coordinated process especially for printed and digital materials.
  • Manage projects from concept, layout and design, to final production.
  • Meet with colleagues in UMC as well as campus partners to determine strategy, audience, methods, direction, and finalization of projects.
  • Support and facilitate campus-wide instruction and observations of the proper use of the University brand and identity.
  • On occasion, the position requires art coordination and collaboration with photographers and videographers (in-house team members, or freelancers.)
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of illustration and typography, color, and artistic composition to produce print and digital media.
  • Advanced skill in the use of most sophisticated desktop tools used in illustrations, layout and design, in particular the Adobe Creative Suite, as well as broader use tools that can be utilized by colleagues, such as Canva, following template development and training.
  • Must be able to clearly and concisely express ideas through verbal and visual medium.
  • Must fully understand print production; how publications are packaged, printed, bound, folded, including full knowledge of paper as it pertains to printing: weight, coatings, textures, etc.
  • Create and maintain professional working relations, campus-wide, with administration, departmental leadership, and staff.
  • Ability to develop effective training programs and materials for self-service tools and systems.

Requirements

Requirements and Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a relevant area with at least 2 years of relevant professional experience OR a minimum 5 years of commercial experience.
  • Must be able to manage projects from concept, layout and design, to final production, including ability to conduct necessary research, and ability to self-edit with proficiency.
  • Must be able to work independently, quickly, and on deadline.
  • Must be ready to share a graphic design portfolio that shows a breadth of skills and materials.
  • Previous experience working in higher education or a highly technical environment is a plus but not necessary.
